The Catacombs of Paris or Catacombes de Paris are an underground ossuary in Paris, France. Located south of the former city gate (the “Barrière d’Enfer” at today’s Place Denfert-Rochereau), the ossuary holds the remains of about 6 million people and fills a renovated section of caverns and tunnels that are the remains of Paris’ stone mines. Opened in the late 18th century, the underground cemetery became a tourist attraction on a small scale from the early 19th century, and has been open to the public on a regular basis from 1874. Following an incident of vandalism, they were closed to the public in September 2009 and reopened 19 December of the same year. The official name for the catacombs is l’Ossuaire Municipal. Although this cemetery covers only a small section of underground tunnels comprising “les carrières de Paris” (“the quarries of Paris”), Parisians today often refer to the entire tunnel network as “the catacombs”. Check them out. Enjoy.

When dogs do something – be it digging, exploring, greeting or playing – they do it full on, just like children, and using their entire bodies, not giving a damn how they look in the process. And why would they? Dogs are awesome athletes, and they don’t care what they look like while they’re getting the job done. They say that dogs are the best swimmers. Well, it would seem that these four-legged creatures have another special gift: flying. Here are 10 funny pictures of dogs flying without wings.

Designed primarily as toys for mothers-to-be and kids clothes mannequins, reborn dolls are rapidly gaining popularity among collectors and women who are unable to have their own kids. Reborn dolls look just like real infants – except for their blank stare and no breathing. Depending on the quality and complicity of the doll its cost ranges from few hundreds to few thousand dollars. First reborns were made of ordinary toy dolls but soon specially designed sets for producing reborn dolls were developed. This set called “mold” consists of plastic head, arms and legs and a stuffed textile body. An artist degreases the mold, slits holes for eyes and mouth and proceeds to the hardest part – the painting of a doll. Reborns are painted with acrylic and oil paints. First the artist creates the natural skin tone of an infant, and then he draws a unique ornament of veins, capillaries, spots and so on.

The hammerhead sharks are a group of sharks in the family Sphyrnidae, so named for the unusual and distinctive structure of their heads, which are flattened and laterally extended into a “hammer” shape called a “cephalofoil”. Most hammerhead species are placed in the genus Sphyrna while the winghead shark is placed in its own genus, Eusphyra. Many, not necessarily mutually exclusive, functions have been proposed for the cephalofoil, including sensory reception, maneuvering, and prey manipulation. Hammerheads are found worldwide in warmer waters along coastlines and continental shelves. Unlike most sharks, hammerheads usually swim in schools during the day, becoming solitary hunters at night. Some of these schools can be found near Malpelo Island in Colombia, Cocos Island, off Costa Rica, and near Molokai Island, in Hawaii. Large schools are also seen in southern and eastern Africa. Take a look at these photos of hammerhead shark.

Are you a Star Wars fan? If yes, Tunisia is definitely the travel destination for you. Parts of George Lucas’ Star Wars movies were filmed in the deserts of Tunisia; and yes, many of these locations can still be visited. Tunisia was used in every Star Wars movie, except Episode V. Star Wars fans may be more familiar with Tatooine than Tunisia – but they are one and the same. Tunisia’s vast deserts and curious dwellings (dug out and carved underground) made it the ideal locale for Star Wars, along with a host of other Hollywood films. Take a look. Enjoy.

Trees naturally filter and clean our air, but in today’s heavily polluted world, it’s just too huge of a task to expect Mother Nature to take care of herself. Taking this into account, designers Mario Caceres and Cristian Canonico have designed a set of beautiful air-filtering trees for the SHIFTboston urban intervention contest. Called TREEPODS, the designs harnesses biomimicry to efficiently emulate the carbon filtration qualities of trees. Check them out, it looks amazing. Enjoy.

Buddhist art originated on the Indian subcontinent following the historical life of Siddhartha Gautama, 6th to 5th century BC, and thereafter evolved by contact with other cultures as it spread throughout Asia and the world. Buddhist art followed believers as the dharma spread, adapted, and evolved in each new host country. It developed to the north through Central Asia and into Eastern Asia to form the Northern branch of Buddhist art, and to the east as far as Southeast Asia to form the Southern branch of Buddhist art. In India, Buddhist art flourished and even influenced the development of Hindu art, until Buddhism nearly disappeared in India around the 10th century due in part to the vigorous expansion of Islam alongside Hinduism. Here’s an example of Buddhist art. Enjoy.
